Spencer was found running loose on the highway. He had a terrible wound, a spiral cut that went to the bone. He had been staked out with a pencil thin rope, and had spooked with it wrapped around his rear leg. His face was partially paralyzed from the trauma of the sudden stop.
Again, my wonderful vet was really concerned about his recovery, and warned me this could be a long road that could end in disaster. (I love the way he worries about me.)
I was not sure I could tend to this kind of wound, but as we do, we jumped in and did our best. And our best was helped along by Spencer, who never moved a hair while I was under his back legs, he told me he wanted my help by watching and nuzzling and allowing me crawl under him and clean and dress that wound every day for weeks and weeks and not killing me..I would not be so gracious if the situation were reversed.
I learned so much from Spencer about love and trust, he humbled me. He lives on a ranch in Montana today with one of the finest horse friends I have ever met, and his wounds have healed like magic, and his lopsided face is almost perfect again. This summer Lynn said she will take Spencer and walk every trail she can find and let him heal completely. They make a wonderful team. If only all the horses could have such a partner. Thank you Lynn.
