This winter was a very bad one for the wild horses of Klamath County. The snow fall was extreme and food scarce, so the horses came down to the lower elevations to find anything exposed, and that brought them on to the the highway. The traffic on icy roads caused dreadful accidents and three died before we were asked to help. ODOT cleared a road through the snow up to their feeding area and three of us hardy fools, (Charlotte, our awesome Humane Society hero, Bev, my long time horse friend, and I) braved the blizzard of the century and drove a ton of hay up to encourage them back to safety.
We went back a week later with another ton of hay, this time very kindly donated by friends, and we were delighted to see the herd was staying where they belonged.
Several trips were made, but the last one was the finest, we were in the company of three local 4H clubs who donated another ton of hay, the kids loved helping, the great photo’s were courtesy of their talents, and the horses are once again safely at home where we hope they will stay now the snow has melted.
Thank you all for your great help, and to Diane for her brilliant photography.
